What to expect

A guide to our ceremonies.

A Punjabi Hindu wedding is a multi-day celebration filled with ritual, colour, music, and meaning. For our international guests, here's a brief guide to each ceremony so you can arrive informed and fully present.

Shagun

A pre-wedding blessing ceremony where the groom's family formally visits the bride's family to present gifts, sweets, and blessings, marking the official beginning of the wedding celebrations. Expect trays piled high with mithai (traditional sweets), dry fruits, and gifts exchanged between the families. Elders offer blessings, a short puja (prayer) is performed, and the groom may have a tilak applied to his forehead. The atmosphere is warm and ceremonial - a beautiful first coming-together of both families before the festivities begin.

Haldi

Held separately for the bride and groom, this is one of the most joyful and chaotic ceremonies of the whole wedding. A bright yellow paste of turmeric, sandalwood, and rose water is applied to the face, arms, hands, and feet, first by the elders, then by anyone who wants to join in. It gets wonderfully messy. The turmeric is believed to cleanse, bless, and give the couple a natural glow before their wedding day. If you're attending, wear something you don't mind getting stained yellow. It does not wash out easily. The mood is informal, loud, and full of laughter.

Mehndi

A professional mehndi artist applies intricate henna designs to the bride's hands and feet. This can take several hours. While the bride sits, guests celebrate around her with music, dancing, food, and their own henna. Guests are warmly encouraged to get mehndi applied on their hands too. A fun tradition: the groom's name is hidden somewhere within the bride's henna design, and he has to find it on the wedding night. Dress in bright colours. This is a festive, feminine celebration and one of the most visually stunning events of the wedding.

Sangeet

Literally meaning "music together," the Sangeet is essentially a family talent show meets wedding party, and it is one of the most fun nights of the entire celebration. Both families prepare and perform choreographed dances, often to Bollywood and Punjabi folk music. Expect Bhangra, Giddha, dramatic costume changes, and plenty of surprises. Guests from both sides take the stage, and the two families playfully "compete." After the performances, the floor opens up and everyone dances together. Dress in your most vibrant outfit. This is the night to go all out.

Choora

A deeply tender and uniquely Punjabi ceremony. The bride's maternal uncle (mama) ceremonially slides a set of red and white bangles (the choora) onto her wrists, while she keeps her eyes closed and her face covered. She is not supposed to look at the choora until her groom sees them first. The bangles are first soaked in milk and rose petals by the bride's maternal aunts as a blessing. Following the choora, golden ornaments called kaleere are tied to the bangles. In a beloved tradition, the bride shakes them over the heads of unmarried friends. Whoever a kaleera falls on is said to be the next to marry.

Marriage

The heart of the celebrations. Sacred Hindu rituals are performed, including the Phere: seven rounds around the holy fire, each representing a sacred vow. It is a deeply spiritual and emotional ceremony that unites two souls and two families forever.
